Appendix is a small organ located in lower abdominal region. This organ looks like a pouch. One of the most important function of appendix is that it stores healthy bacteria that help in digestion. But, researches conducted have revealed that removal of appendix from body of a healthy individual does not cause any harm to digestive system, nor overall health. Surgical procedure employed to remove appendix is called appendectomy.
Appendectomy is necessary in case of appendicitis which is inflammation of appendix. In this disorder, appendix gets filled with pus, resulting in severe lower abdominal pain.
Another reason for appendectomy can be infection of appendix. Since, appendix is a storehouse of healthy bacteria, chances of infection are already increased. Also, the environment found inside the appendix (suitable amount of warmth and moisture) is favorable for growth and multiplication of bacteria. Both the cases of appendicitis and infection of appendix may require appendectomy as a treatment option.
Following are few symptoms that may require appendectomy procedure as a treatment option:
Before the procedure of appendectomy begins, patient must let doctor know about substances he/she is allergic to, intake of current medications to treat other diseases, if you are on over-the-counter medications etc. as a precautionary measure. For appendectomy, fasting for eight hours is recommended. You can take few sips of water if you are really thirsty but, intake of food and other drinks is strictly prohibited.
