Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery treats cardiac diseases like atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis. These diseases occur because of plaque deposits on the walls of arteries. This causes narrowing of the blood vessels and this leads to obstruction in blood flow.

Fatty substances and plaque gets deposited on the walls of arteries causing arteriosclerosis. This disrupts smooth blood flow and makes the artery narrower.
To perform bypass surgery, anesthesia is administered. A small incision is made on the chest to access heart. Later, through surgical procedure, plaque deposited on artery walls is removed. The procedure takes almost 6-7 hours to complete.
Patient has to remain in hospital for few days after the surgery to clear off any complications that might occur post surgery. For initial few weeks after the surgery, light diet comprising of liquids, soups, boiled vegetables, rice etc. is recommended. Only light exercises like walking etc. are permitted. Swimming, running, trekking, weight exercises etc. are strictly not allowed. Lifting of heavy weights might put pressure on the valves of heart.
