Dilation and Curettage (D&C) is a method for surgically removing part of internal lining of the uterus. This lining contains tissues that are scraped and scooped (curettage) during the procedure. This procedure is carried out to diagnose and treat some uterine conditions like excessive bleeding, or to clear the uterine lining after abortion or miscarriage.
Dilation and Curettage involves minor surgery that includes opening the cervix (dilation). The cervix is the opening to your uterus. After dilation step, a spoon like object called the curette is used to remove the tissues from the inner lining of the uterus.
Your doctor may ask you undergo a D&C procedure for various reasons like:
Before the D&C procedure begins, avoid eating or drinking anything. A physical check up is conducted to know if you are physically fit for the procedure. You require to visit your doctor a day before your surgery in order to apply a gel to start the process of opening your cervix.
After D&C surgery, you will feel tired for a couple of days. You can also experience cramps during this time. There can be light bleeding after the procedure. You are allowed to resume your daily chores in a couple of days after the procedure. If your doctor removes a cancerous tumor from your uterus, he/she may ask you to take further tests to diagnose and treat the cancer issue. In case of non cancerous tumors, no further follow up is required.
