FESS stands for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. As the name suggests, it is a surgery carried out to deal with one's sinusitis. FESS is a primary approach used for treating chronic sinusitis.
Sinusitis is a terrible infection that gives you burning sensations under the skin of your face, especially in the T area of your face. Sinusitis occurs when your sinus gets swollen or inflamed due to germs or any other blockage. Nasal Polyps, Deviated Septum, or some allergies, etc., can also be responsible for causing sinusitis.
Sinusitis is classified into three sub-types; Acute Sinusitis, Sub-Acute Sinusitis and Chronic Sinusitis. Acute Sinusitis and Sub-Acute Sinusitis can be taken care of by proper medical treatments. Chronic Sinusitis remains for a long duration. Temporary measures can be taken for temporary fixation of the sinus issue. But, in some cases the symptoms of sinusitis are so strong and troublesome that surgery will be the only option to deal with it. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) allows various approaches like minimizing post operative complications and reduction of tissue disruption to treat the affected sinuses.

Before the FESS surgery procedure, your doctor will ask you to take a CT scan test to ensure about the status of your disease. Doctor will need the images of your nose to study. Also, he/she will ask you for a physical checkup to ascertain if your eligible for the surgery. If everything seems normal, a particular date will be discussed with you for the surgery. You must make sure to keep your doctor updated with your medical history, your medications (if any), if you are a diabetic, etc.
After the surgery, your nose will be packed and covered with cotton. You will be discharged once the doctor finds that your vitals are normal. Follow up check will be done to remove the bandages and analyse the progress of your recovery.
