Hernia can be explained as bulge in the organ or shifting of the organ from its original place. Hernia in abdomen generally occurs if the tissues of internal lining of abdomen become weak. This results in easy tearing of tissue which may cause bulging of the organ through the newly created cavity to form a balloon like sac. If blood circulation to this bulged out part is stopped, it can prove to be dangerous. Hernia repair (Laparoscopic Inguinal) surgery is usually the recommended solution to this problem.
Inguinal hernia that is usually found in groin region, is one of the most common type of hernia. Reasons for weak abdominal walls in adults can be natural weakness, constant coughing that lasts for long duration, lifting heavy weights, difficulty in urination or bowel movements etc.
Since, abdominal walls are relatively weak, they are more prone to internal injuries and strains. If you have previously undergone abdominal surgery which incurred incisions, then it makes lining of abdominal walls further weak and increases chances of hernia. In children, hernia cases are quite rare. But, when they do occur, it is the case of congenital hernia (since birth).
Since hernia cannot heal on its own, it requires medical attention. Most of the complex types of hernia require emergency medical operation. Hernia causes intense pain and discomfort in the region where it has developed. If hernia is not treated, in its initial stage, it might increase strain on surrounding muscles and make them weak.
To diagnose hernia, doctor will first physically examine the region where there is intense paining. To confirm predictions, diagnostic or image viewing tests can be recommended by the doctor. Depending upon these test results, doctor will decide whether to opt for surgery or to prescribe medications in case the bulge or shift is very minor in size.
