Knee joint is held together with the help of ligaments. Ligaments hold the bones together and help to control the movements of the joint. Any injuries or damage to these ligaments affects the motion of the joint. Knee Ligament Surgery is one of the method to fix such ligament issues.
When you perform certain activities with your knees, the ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) is responsible to control your forward movements. Forward movements are considered normal if they are performed up-to a certain angle or degree. Extension in this sliding motion can damage the structure of the ligament in the knee leading to long term problems in some patients.
ACL can be torn or damaged in a number of different ways. Sudden pivoting during sports activity is one of the common way to cause ACL injury. After such an injury, your knee will become swollen. Inability to perform any activity associated with your knees signifies that an internal injury has occurred and requires immediate medical assistance.
Symptoms of ACL injury or tear include:
Patients with ACL injuries can be diagnosed using physical examination. Some orthopedist take X-rays to check if there is any fracture caused. If these examinations are insufficient, doctor can ask MRI scan for further analysis of the ligament tear.
There are three types of ACL tears:
Grade 1 – When the ACL has suffered mild damage
Grade 2 – Occurrence of rare ACL injury that has partially torn the ACL
Grade 3 – When ACL is completely torn
Individuals with a Grade 3 ACL tear require Knee Ligament Surgery. Surgical treatment may also vary on other factors like growth plates and type of injury.
