Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is located at the center of your knee and controls rotation and forward movements. ACL surgery is done to repair the damage caused to this important ligament of your knee.
Ligaments are like tough elastic bands made up of tissues that connect and surround the joints of your bones to support and provide movement between them. If the ligaments of your knees get damaged, it makes your knee joints unstable. Anterior Cruciate Ligament is one of the four main ligaments present within the joints of your knee. It is located at the front of your knee. Hence, it is more common ligament to be injured.
Ligament often damages due to various reasons that include:
If medical treatments are not satisfactory, your doctor may ask you to undergo ligament surgery for effective treatment. In this surgery, ACL is replaced with a piece of healthy tendon that holds the knee joints together. This tendon graft can be obtained from an organ donor.
Before the surgery, your doctor will physically examine you to know about your current health status like Blood Pressure, Sugar, etc. You are asked to provide all the information to your doctor about your medications (if any).
After the surgery, your doctor will observe your health condition. If your health is satisfactory after surgery, you will be discharged from the hospital. Your knee will be swollen for some days. Follow up checks will be done weekly to remove your stitches. You will take some weeks for resuming your daily activities. Complete recovery will take few months. Follow all the instructions and diet plan given by your doctor.
