Surgical procedure adopted to remove uterus from a woman's body is called as hysterectomy. When hysterectomy is performed with the help of laparoscope (thin tube with attached camera and light) it is called as laparoscopic hysterectomy. It makes use of minimal invasive approach for uterus removal.
Below are mentioned some reasons why hysterectomy is performed:
One of the advantages of laparoscopic hysterectomy is that it is done through small incisions made on lower abdomen. These incisions heal quickly as compared to traditional way of performing hysterectomy. Also, they are less invisible. Post surgery recovery time is reduced drastically and patient experiences less pain.
Laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) is a similar procedure wherein instead of making incisions on lower abdomen, surgery is performed through vaginal opening. In this procedure, ovaries may or may not be removed. In this laparoscopic hysterectomy surgical approach, cervix has to be removed.
Laparoscopic-assisted supracervical hysterectomy (LSH) is another approach wherein cervix does not need to be removed. In this procedure, uterus is broken down into small pieces and removed through abdominal cavity.
In total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) surgical approach, laparoscope is inserted into the abdomen through several small incisions. Long thin instruments are used to disconnect or detach entire uterus through laparoscopic ports.
Doctor may choose any of the above mentioned laparoscopic hysterectomy approaches depending upon the need and requirement.
