Prostate gland surrounds the neck of the bladder and it is a part of the male's reproductive system. Its function is to secrete fluid component of semen. With age, this gland often enlarges and may lead to prostate cancer. Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP) Surgery is a best way to deal with this problem.
An enlarged prostate causes urinary problems. TURP can be conducted if other medications, treatments and methods do not show any progress. TURP is found to be an efficient method to treat the enlarged gland problem.
Before TURP surgery, your doctors will perform some blood tests and check your ECG to ensure that you are eligible for the surgery. You are asked to avoid any food or water intake six hours prior to the surgery.
Initially, you will be sedated with general anesthesia. TURP Surgery generally involves usage of a device called a resectoscope. This device has a thin, flexible metallic tube that contains a light, camera and a loop of wire. Your surgeon inserts this device into the urethra, guiding it to the site of prostate with the help of light and camera.
The loop of wire is heated with the help of an electric current, and this is used to cut away a section or the entire prostate from your body. A catheter is then used to pump fluid into the bladder to flush the pieces of prostate that have been removed.
This procedure can take around an hour for completion. The catheter will be left in place for few days until you are able to urinate normally. This can be discomforting for a few days. Once your catheter is removed, you are allowed to go home.
You recover within a week or two after TURP surgery, But, you must be very careful about your activities for at least two months. You must avoid lifting heavy objects or exercising for some weeks. You can get back to your normal daily routine after six weeks.
