Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP) or Prostate Removal is a surgery for removing a part of prostate in males. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is a condition which is characterized by an enlarged prostate gland in males which necessitates TURP surgery.
A resectoscope, which is a device consisting of wires, camera and a light, is used to perform TURP surgery. A general anesthetic is administered before commencing the surgery. The camera in the resectoscope guides the urologist in finding the affected prostate pieces. The loop of wire in the resectoscope is heated and then used to cut the problematic section in the prostate. A catheter then flushes away the unwanted pieces of prostate. The catheter is then left inside your body for ease of urination.
