Septoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to treat deviated septum which not only makes the appearance of nose weird but also gives rise to various breathing problems. Septum is the narrow bridge that separates right nostril and left nostril.
Septoplasty can be done either for cosmetic or medical purpose. When done for cosmetic purpose, it is also called as rhinoplasty. It corrects the deviated angle and gives a sharper and elongated look to the nose. This helps in enhancing overall facial features. Septoplasty is generally done from medical point of view to help in curing breathing problems.
To perform septoplasty, local anesthesia or general anesthesia is administered. The surgery is carried out with the help of endoscope which is a thin and flexible wire with attached camera and light at its one end. Endoscope is inserted into the nose through an incision made on the side of the nose. Due to attached light and camera, doctors are able to view nasal passage clearly. Once, it is inserted, it is used to correct the deviated septum and hold it straight with the help of stitches.
The whole procedure of septoplasty lasts for around an hour or two. After that, patient is allowed to return home on the same day itself. To reduce intensity of pain, doctor may recommend you some pain killers.
Post surgery, patient is refrained from playing sports, such as rugby, football, handball, volleyball etc. which might cause injury to the nose. Also, one should be careful while performing any activities which might cause injury to the nose. If you experience bleeding in the nose for few consistent days post septoplasty, it is important that you consult with your doctor to discuss the problem.
