Septoplasty is a surgical method to fix the incorrect alignment of the septum of the nose. It is also commonly known as septal reconstruction or sub-mucous resection of the septum. A nasal septum divides the nostrils into two by separating the left and right airway passage in the nose. Any deviation in this structure causes breathing issues or leads to bleeding.
A septoplasty procedure is carried out under the influence of local or general anesthesia. The difference between local anesthesia and general anesthesia is that local anesthesia numbs only that section of the body which will be operated, whereas general anesthesia will affect the whole body. An endoscope is a thin, flexible wire having a light and camera at one end.
During the procedure, an endoscope is inserted into the nostrils to get access to the septum area. An incision is made at the side of the nose from where the endoscope is passed in. After finding the deviated septum, it is well positioned and adhered in place using stitches. Once the main process is complete, the outer incisions are also stitched. Septoplasty surgery procedure takes overall one hour to complete.
Septoplasty surgery is an out patient procedure. Once the influence of anesthesia wears off, patients are allowed to go home. Doctors may give some injections or pain killers after the surgery to ease pain.
Post surgery precautionary measures are necessary to follow. Make sure you prevent your nose from any pressure or damage. After the surgery, your nose will be dressed with cotton and bandages. Visit your doctor time to time to change your nose dressing. If you have any problem or doubt regarding your nose condition, share and ask your doctor about it. Also, make sure to take your medicines on time to enhance the healing process and ease pain. Go for follow up check ups as well if your doctor has asked for it.
