Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to re-align the deviated septum of your nose correctly. The irregularities in the shape of your nasal cavities could result into causing chronic sinusitis. To fix the nasal structure, septoplasty surgery may be necessitated.
The nasal septum acts like a partition that divides the nasal cavity into two halves. The nasal septum is made up of central supporting skeleton which is covered by a mucus membrane on both its side. The frontal part of this wall is firm but bendable structure mostly composed of cartilage and externally covered by skin. Under this layer of skin, there is a substantial supply of blood vessels. An ideal nasal septum is exactly placed mid-line, that separates the left side from the right side of the nose into equal passageways.
Not all individuals have perfectly well structured nasal septum with equally divided nasal passages. There can be slight dissimilarities among the left and right nasal passage. But a “deviated septum” is a serious condition. It occurs when the nasal septum is severely shifted away from the mid-line. One of the major result of such abnormal placement creates difficulty in breathing. In some cases, the crooked placement of the nasal septum interferes with the drainage of sinuses, that leads to repeating sinus infections.
Septoplasty is a preferable surgical treatment to correct an off-centered nasal septum. Patients having minor issues with a deviated septum do not require this surgery. But, if the off-centered nasal septum causes the below mentioned problems, septoplasty can be required.
