Septoplasty is a type of surgery that is used to correct the angle of deviated septum of the nose. It is also referred as sub-mucous resection of septum or septal reconstruction. Septum is the wall that is present in between the nose which separates both the nostrils. Deviated septum can cause pain, create breathing problems and may also result in bleeding.
Patient is administered either local anesthesia or general anesthesia for the nose surgery procedure. Local anesthesia only numbs the specific part which is to be operated, whereas general anesthesia puts the whole body into deep sleep state temporarily.
Use of endoscope is implemented in the procedure of septoplasty. Endoscope which is flexible, thin wire with attached light and camera to its one end, is inserted in the nose to examine nasal passage and septum area in elaboration. An incision is made on side of the nose through which endoscope is inserted. Deviated septum is then straightened and held in place by stitches.
The whole procedure of septoplasty lasts for around an hour. It is an outpatient procedure an patient is allowed to go home on the same day itself. To alleviate pain, pain killers are recommended.
Post surgery, there are certain precautions one has to follow to prevent any damage to the nose. Sports such as football, volleyball, rugby etc., where there are chances of hurting the nose should be avoided. Any small injury to the nose post surgery may cause bleeding and increase pain. Heavy weight lifting exercises should also be prohibited for few days post surgery.
