Tonsils are two oval shaped tissue pads located in neck. They may feel like lymph nodes, but are actually a part of immune system or lymphatic system. Whenever, a person suffers from throat infection, tonsils form the first defense mechanism to fight against it. But, due to certain reasons, tonsils have to be removed. The surgical procedure for removing tonsils is called as tonsillectomy.
Tonsillectomy procedure is recommended for both adults as well as children. It can be performed using two different methods - Cauterization and cold knife dissection. Time required for completion of tonsillectomy is less than an hour. Usually, patient is allowed to return home on the same day. In few initial days post surgery, patient might experience pain in throat. If the pain becomes severe, you are allowed to take pain killers as well to alleviate pain. It may take a week or more for the patient to completely recover.
