Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of uterus that may or may not include other nearby organs. This surgery is performed in females who have health disorders that include fibroid tumors, cancerous tumors, endometriosis and uterine prolapse.
Hysterectomy surgery has various types such as:
Total Hysterectomy
This surgery includes removal of entire uterus including the fallopian tubes and the cervix except the ovaries.
Hysterectomy with Bilateral Oophorectomy
This surgical mechanism includes removal of one or both the ovaries, and sometimes the fallopian tubes along with the uterus.
Radical Hysterectomy
This operation includes discarding the uterus, cervix, the top portion of the vagina, tissues surrounding the cervix in the pelvic cavity, and sometimes the pelvic lymph nodes. This surgery is mainly conducted for cancer patients.
Supracervical Hysterectomy (partial or subtotal hysterectomy)
This surgical method involves removal of the uterus, keeping the cervix intact.
A hysterectomy surgery can be conducted through different sections of the body. Such procedures can be explained in the following manner.
Abdominal hysterectomy – Surgery is conducted through the abdomen via a surgical incision made around that section. This procedure is more commonly used to remove the ovaries and the fallopian tubes because of an enlarged uterus condition, or diseases like cancer and endometriosis has spread to the pelvic cavity.
Vaginal hysterectomy – Uterus is removed out through the vaginal opening. This surgical process is usually carried out in cases of uterine prolapse, or where vaginal repairs are necessary to related situations. No incisions are required in this method.
Laparoscope-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) – Incisions are made in the abdomen, but the uterus and/or other organs are removed out through the vaginal canal by using a laparoscope.
The technique and the type of hysterectomy surgery is decided by your gynecologist based upon your uterine conditions. Females who have had a hysterectomy surgery will not be able to get pregnant. Menstruation will no longer occur for them.
