Hysterectomy can be performed in three ways; Abdominal hysterectomy, Vaginal hysterectomy and laparoscopic hysterectomy.
- Abdominal hysterectomy: Hysterectomy is performed through horizontal or vertical incision made on abdomen. This procedure does not reveal any scars, and marks produced get healed during recovery period.
- Vaginal hysterectomy: As the name suggests, hysterectomy is carried out through incision made on vagina. Advantage of this type of hysterectomy is that it does not leave any visible marks.
- Laparoscopic hysterectomy: The procedure makes use of laparoscope which is a thin and flexible instrument with attached camera and light at its one end. With the help of laparoscope, hysterectomy is performed.
There are hardly any major risks associated with hysterectomy. One may experience symptoms such as abdominal pain or bleeding. If these symptoms fail to fade, better consult with urologist. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for few weeks post surgery. Also, lifting of heavy weight objects is strictly prohibited. One should try walking (slow walking) as early as possible as it will help in increasing strength of pelvic muscles and will prohibit formation of clots.
